Four Part Workshop Series

This workshop introduces the participants to the earnings and spending relationships and pattern, provides a few fundamental tools to get started tracking spending patterns to build a spending and savings plan.

Activities in class: Excel work, pivot tables, establish types of spending, evaluating spending buckets

Activities after class: start tracking earnings and spending, pivot tables, establish a trading account

This workshop takes the next steps in building your spending and savings plan. We start by establishing a savings/spending goal (save $10,000 for a down-payment), translate that goal into smaller, easily digestible chunks (3-year plan, for example, and monthly savings goals), then identifying ways to accomplish that goal.

Activities in class: tracking goals and tracking returns

Activities after class: identify a savings goal, a time horizon, and monthly changes to meet that goal

We walk through the differences of stocks and bonds, talk about insurance types and the risk-reward trade-off. We discuss compounding and the power of starting early.

Activities in class: risk-reward relationship, tracking stocks, buying stocks, tracking ETFs, buying ETFs, tracking mutual funds, buying mutual funds

Activities after class: purchase at least 1 share of stock

At the end of Workshop 3, participants will be asked to open an individual trading account (Schwab, TD-Ameritrade, Robinhood, etc.), fund the account and purchase at least 1 share of stock. During Workshop 4 we will look at the stocks that people purchased, track the history of prices of those stocks, talk about dividends and stock-splits and talk about the reasons why people chose the stocks that they did. Participants will engage in research to build out a diversified portfolio of stocks that they would like to hold.

Activities after class: make another purchase of a stock, identify a schedule of actively saving and investing money towards a goal
