Biography
After serving in the 75th Ranger Regiment in the U.S. Army, Saxon Morrison was ready to take his next step on his career path. However, with a five-year gap in education, Saxon wanted to find a program that would prepare him for a career in business. “What motivated me to apply to the Master in Management program was I was looking at the programs that would fit me best,” Saxon says. “I was a history major in college, and I was in the Army, so I wasn't really doing anything related to business.”
Saxon believed the Master in Management program would be the best program to gain the introductory business knowledge to help pursue his interest in logistics and supply chain in the defense and health care sectors. “The skills I've been learning in the Master in Management program, in terms of advancing my career, I would say the first thing would just be knowledge. You learn a lot, and you really are given a lot and you have to utilize it.”
Secondly, Saxon says he’s been able to improve his communication skills in terms of networking, meeting new people and finding his community. “You're meeting people with different perspectives – some who are in MBAs, some who are in undergrad, who have different perspectives on life, and that's what I really enjoy,” he says.
Saxon has also worked hard to connect with faculty in the classroom, as well as meet with alumni to truly expand his network to make the most of his experience. From class projects, working directly with clients and getting hands-on experience, Saxon has developed not only practical business skills, but also greater confidence in his professional abilities. “I would say confidence, I think in terms of business – more confidence and more of a professional manner,” he says. “I would say I'm a little bit more outgoing now, which I would never really see myself as being. I think those are some things I learned about myself.”
