Biography
After transitioning from military service in the U.S. Army, Michael Allmon 25MBV spent several years working in manufacturing before an unexpected layoff pushed him to reassess his next step. Seeking to strengthen his business and financial knowledge, he enrolled in Goizueta’s Master of Business for Veterans to build the skills he knew he needed for long-term success.
By the time classes began, Allmon had accepted a new role as a General Manager for Groundworks, a home services company. Almost immediately, he found himself applying concepts from the classroom directly into his day-to-day work.
“I found myself taking our first accounting class discussing the income statement and then going back to my role and immediately applying those skills in reviewing our monthly P&L statements,” he said. “Understanding the levers that will then affect targeted improvement on the P&L allowed me to quickly adapt to my new role.”
For Allmon, the timing of the program proved invaluable. Transitioning from military leadership and logistics into full P&L ownership required a new level of financial understanding and business fluency.
“It was a hard shift transitioning from military service to logistics and project management to owning a P&L statement,” he said. “I needed to understand those inputs and outputs quickly and synchronizing the program with that transition gave me the immediate skills I needed to execute my role and position me for opportunities of greater responsibility.”
The impact was immediate and measurable. The financial and operational skills he developed during the program helped accelerate his success within Groundworks and opened doors to new leadership opportunities.
“The skills I learned helped me to understand those inner workings of the P&L statement very quickly and allowed me to achieve early success, which has provided me multiple opportunities to lead different parts of our organization and significantly increase my income,” he said.
Beyond the classroom, Allmon says the relationships he built with classmates and faculty became one of the most meaningful aspects of the experience.
“The relationships I made in the program remind me of some of the amazing bonds I had with those I served with in the military,” he said. “Our mutual connection of that service in MBV brought us together much faster than I believe a normal MBA program would.”
He also credits the program’s culture of support and care as something that continues to stand out long after graduation.
“I felt that my leadership from the program and several professors during my time continuously demonstrated genuine care for me and my family,” Allmon said. “There was a lot of change occurring in my life at the time and, unprovoked, program leadership continuously checked in on me to see how I was and how they could help. I'm still grateful for their genuine service. I think that defines the program more than anything else.”
