Biography

Hancheng Cao joined Emory University’s Goizueta Business School as an assistant professor in information systems and operations management in September 2025. His research sits at the intersection of computational social science, human-computer interaction, and information technologies. He uses large-scale data, develops algorithms, and builds systems to understand how emerging technologies—such as collaboration software and generative AI—are reshaping the workplace and the future of work.

Hancheng’s work has been recognized with multiple awards at top venues, including a Best Paper award at Computer-Human Interaction (CHI) 2023, Honorable Mention awards at Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW) 2020 and CHI 2021, and an Oral presentation at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML). His research and perspectives have been featured in leading media outlets including The New York Times, Wired, Forbes, MIT Technology Review, New Scientist, and TED. He has conducted research at Microsoft and the Allen Institute for AI, and collaborated with organizations such as Asana and various startups.

He earned his PhD in computer science with a minor in management science and engineering from Stanford University, and holds a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University. Most recently, Hancheng was a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft’s Office of Applied Research.
