Emory and Goizueta Business School have decided to relocate Commencements events to the Gas South District in Duluth, Georgia, an indoor complex that includes the Gas South Arena and the Gas South Convention Center.
The decision to relocate Commencement activities was not taken lightly and was driven by concerns about safety and security. Emory consulted with the Emory Police Department, security advisors, and other agencies — each of whom advised against holding Commencement events on our campuses. The venue we have selected is indoors and regularly hosts large-scale events.
While Commencement may not look the same this year, we are committed to celebrating our graduates, faculty, and staff - and all of their achievements.
Commencement Questions
As you have likely heard from President Fenves’ message, Emory and Goizueta Business School have decided to relocate Commencement events to the Gas South District in Duluth, Georgia, an indoor complex that includes the Gas South Arena and the Gas South Convention Center.
While Commencement may not look the same this year, we are committed to celebrating our graduates and all of your achievements.
We've included a revised schedule of BBA events below. For further information on Commencement, please see the University's commencement site. Please forward this communication to any guests or family that are planning to attend.
Revised BBA Schedule
- 7:00 am Doors open
- 7:00 am-8:00 am Student check-in
- 8:30am University Ceremony in the Arena
- 9:30am Transition to Convention Center
- 9:45am Reception
- 10:30am Student line-up
- 11:30am-1:45pm BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony
The Graduation Celebration originally scheduled for Saturday, May 11 will be folded into the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony on Monday, May 13. While performances are unrealistic in this venue, all other key components, including Beta Gamma Sigma induction, presentations of honors and awards, the class orator, the distinguished educator address and superlatives will be included as part of the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony.
Awards will be listed in your program and announced at the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony. Those students who might be receiving an academic or program award have already been notified. Honors at the level of Distinction, High Distinction, and Highest Distinction based on class ranking will be announced via email to students who qualify over the weekend. These graduates will be given an honors stole to wear during the diploma ceremony.
Yes, all marching BBA students will cross the stage individually and have their names and any designated honors read at the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony.
BBA/MPA students will continue to march on Monday only. Just like all other BBAs, you will attend the University Ceremony and the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony that day. BBA/MSBA students will also attend these Monday events and are invited to march on Friday evening in the MBA/MSBA/MAF Diploma Ceremony. BBA/MSBA students will receive a separate email from Christina Wan with details for that day.
Yes, Grad Images will be on site to take photos of each graduate as they cross the stage.
Yes, there will be a catered reception for graduating students and their families at the Convention Center between the University Ceremony and the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony.
All graduating students should be in academic regalia. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
Tickets will be required for all events at the Gas South Arena and Convention Center for graduates and their guests. The tickets you have already obtained for the Quad ceremony will be the ones you use to access the Arena for the University Ceremony. We will be automatically assigning new tickets for the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony in the Convention Center. All you will need to do is log back in to download/print your tickets. An email from Marching Order will be sent directly in the next day or two. The number of tickets you will be assigned for the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony will be based on the number of guests you indicated you will have in the survey I sent out in April. If you did not complete this survey, the number of tickets you are assigned will be based on the number of tickets you obtained for the Quad. If you need more tickets for the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony than you’ve been assigned, please email Jessica Lowy.
The venue is located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth, GA.
There will be ample, free on-site parking available. Park in either Deck 1 or Deck 2, which will put you between the Arena (the location for the first ceremony) and the Convention Center (the location for the second ceremony). You can find a campus map on the main Commencement website. Parking will be free for all Emory Commencement events.
Please note the information below if you have guests with mobility concerns:
- Parking Decks 1 and 2 have designated handicap parking spaces which are available on a first-come, first served basis and cannot be reserved in advance.
- A limited number of designated handicap parking areas are located at the front of the Arena. The designated handicap parking spaces are available on a first-come, first served basis and cannot be reserved in advance. Please contact a Parking Attendant to assist with drop-off or pick-up arrangements. Guests in wheelchairs should enter the building at the main entrance. The Arena has ADA parking on all levels of the parking deck and ADA parking in the front lot. Drop-offs for ADA should use Arena Drive (traffic light on Sugarloaf Parkway) and may be dropped off at the front of the Arena near the crosswalk.
If needed, a bus service from Emory to the Gas South District will be available for graduates only. We will share more details shortly. If you are interested in using public transit, you may take Marta to the Chamblee station and Uber to the venue from there.
Rideshare pick-up location is outside the Arena in the A5 parking lot.
Doors will open at 7am. Attendees should arrive early to permit time to walk from the parking deck to the arena (we highly recommend comfortable shoes!) as well as security screening. Graduates must be on-site, in their regalia, by 7:45am for check in.
At the Gas South District venues, there are extra security measures in place so be sure to check the main commencement page. All graduates and guests must have tickets and will be screened by metal detectors. You may only carry in a small clutch (maximum size 6½" x 4½") OR a clear bag (maximum size 12" x 12" x 6"), so please plan accordingly. Be sure to review the list of venue prohibited items (including common graduation items like balloons and signs over 8½" x 11").
All graduates are expected to attend both ceremonies. This ceremony represents the University Ceremony planned for the Quad. As such, it will include conferral of degrees and your graduation speaker. In addition, student check-in will be prior to this first ceremony of the day so that you can be ready for line-up for the BBA Awards and Diploma Ceremony afterward.
Golf carts will be available for those who need them. In addition, the venue provides wheelchair escorts inside for guests with special needs. Wheelchair escorts are available for free upon request at main entry points. However, please be aware that the numbers of golf carts and wheelchairs is limited and thus there may be a wait, so please plan ahead.
Please read all information carefully. If you are still unsure about something, you may reach out to your advisor or email Paula Zwillich.
