Entrepreneurship has always been a calling for Charles Goetz. Now, countless successful businesses later (not to mention his very first venture which helped pay his way through college), Goetz is a favorite instructor among Goizueta students. Giving back and making a difference for future generations of business school students that share his entrepreneurial passion is the objective of the recently endowed Goetz Scholarship.
An entrepreneurial passion
Goetz has over fifteen years of experience in developing, implementing and growing entrepreneurial ventures. He has been responsible for starting and building nine new ventures to date, employing more than 1,000 employees and delivering returns to investors in many cases far exceeding initial investment expectations. These companies operated in six unique industries including: banking, healthcare, radio broadcasting, sports, real estate and advertising. He has been awarded three patents and numerous copyrights.
Before his pursuing his entrepreneurial goals, Goetz was a senior executive at Citicorp. He sits on a number of both private business and not-for-profit boards. Goetz has written three books: one a business book tailored to entrepreneurs entitled The Great Entrepreneurial Divide – The Winning Tactics of Successful Entrepreneurs,and Why Everyone Else Fails! The second, a book on entrepreneurship for people who don't have a business background, called So You Want To Start A Business, and the third one, a political thriller novel, titled, Angels of Conspiracy. In addition, Goetz is responsible for the development of "Marketnomics," a mathematical model based on calculus that quantifies perceived customer value by product features resulting in product offerings with substantially greater value propositions at lower costs and higher demand.
Sharing his Expertise
While in the midst of selling and starting new businesses, Goetz wanted to help others, and decided that it was time to try something new and teaching was at the top of his list. Goetz joined Goizueta Business School in the fall of 2001. Teaching one entrepreneurship class quickly grew into teaching as much as seven classes per year across all programs. As a lecturer, Goetz teaches MBA, Executive MBA and PhD students’ introduction to entrepreneurship, applied entrepreneurship, business development and directed study. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Lecturer Award in 2006.
Helping the next generation of entrepreneurs
Goetz’s entrepreneurial as well as his teaching experiences have shown him just how important giving back really is. “Times are tough and I know this is when it's most needed. Entrepreneurship is the country’s future and for most of the world too. New and small business represented 70-80% of all new jobs created in the last 20 years in the U.S.” That is why Goetz has generously endowed an entrepreneurship award that will provide a partial scholarship for an MBA student each year with an interest in entrepreneurship. Charlie hopes that other faculty and former students will follow with their own support. "I encourage others to either add to the entrepreneurship award if that is their passion, or to setup one of their own.”
