Remembering Albert "Al" Bows

To the Goizueta Community:
I am saddened to inform you that Albert "Al" Bows, dean of the business school in the mid-1970s, has passed last Thursday at age 95. On behalf of Goizueta Business School, I extend condolences to the Bows family.
A graveside service officiated by the Reverend Jim Bell will be held at 2:30pm on Tuesday, December 2, at Westview Cemetery (1680 Westview Drive SW).
Albert Julius Bows, Jr. was born in Chicago, IL on October 5, 1913 and was the son of Albert and Lily Bows. Al graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL and attended Northwestern University where he earned his undergraduate business degree and MBA, achieving the highest scholastic record of his graduating class. He was a Certified Public Accountant and upon graduation in 1935 joined Arthur Andersen & Co. where he worked for 40 years until his retirement in 1975.
In 1940, Al married Helen Virginia Johnson of Atlanta and in 1941 moved to Atlanta to help open Arthur Andersen's Atlanta office. During his career at Arthur Andersen, he become managing partner of the Atlanta office, a senior partner of the firm, and was one of the firm's top leaders, serving on its board of partners. He was a director and vice president of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and was chairman of the Georgia Society of CPAs.
Upon retirement from Arthur Andersen in 1975, he became dean of the business school at Emory University. He served on the boards of directors of numerous corporations and civic organizations including Georgia-Pacific Corporation, Springs Industries, Shaw Industries, Cagle's Inc., Munich American and North American Royalties. In 1968, he was president of the board of directors of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. He was a director of the High Museum, the Atlanta History Center, an honorary life member of Junior Achievement, and director and chairman of the Salvation Army.
Al was a member of the Commerce Club, Capital City Club and Peachtree Golf Club, and was an active and faithful member of Peachtree Christian Church where he was an elder.
Al was a friend to many, and we will miss him. May God bless his wife, Helen, and their family.
