Overview of the Role
Investment Banks help companies and governments issue securities, help investors purchase securities, manage financial assets, trade securities and provide financial advice. Firms have different areas and groups within them including sales and trading, investment banking and capital markets.
From raising money, to advisory services, to underwriting and brokerage services, to research, to asset management Investment Bankers do it all. The main areas of work are in Corporate Finance, Trading and Research Analysis. In Corporate Finance you would be dealing with corporate clients giving advice such as mergers and acquisitions and raising money from the equity and debt market. In the Trading business you buy and sell securities and commodities. Finally, Research Analysts analyze the movement of stocks and predict actions.
What Recruiters Want
Recruiters for jobs in Investment Banking look for an array of skills, including:
- Deep understanding of financial analysis and deal structure
- Knowledge of how to use persuasive information and communication skills
- Accounting skills can be a strong plus, especially in initial positions
