Unlike investment banking, PE firms typically do not have annual recruiting cycles. Compound that with the limited number of positions in the PE market as a whole and it can be difficult to break into the field. If you don’t get an opportunity in PE immediately following the MBA program (and few do), my advice is not lose focus of your ultimate goal. You should ensure that your immediate job is one that will be fulfilling but also will allow you to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for you to be attractive to the PE industry down the road. For me, that included supplementing my pre-MBA operational experience with transaction and corporate strategy experience gained within Mergers & Acquisitions investment banking after Goizueta. Firms look for talent based upon a combination of industry comprehension, operating experience and/or transaction capabilities dependent upon their investment strategy.  Given that firms often hire based on relationships, I also continued to build my network and stay in touch with those in the industry.
